The titles were last held in the Hastings in 2013 before heading to Coffs Harbour (2014-2016) and most recently the Tweed Coast (2017-2019).
Port Macquarie surfer and surf school coach Wayne Hudson said it was a huge coup for the area.
"The diversity of different breaks they can use on any day is good," he said.
"In a 20-minute drive you can have five different breaks that will suit everyday regardless of conditions. That'll be one of the factors why it came back."
Mr Hudson said you can go anywhere in Port Macquarie and find a semi-contestable wave.
"The Tweed Coast have lots of point breaks, but if the wind goes nor-east you have nothing," he said.
"It's great for the community when you think of the amount of money coming in during winter so it's a good timeframe for surfing to be here for those accommodation places and restaurants.
"Otherwise they'd be pretty quiet before the warmer months."
It is unknown how many local competitors will qualify for the tournament or receive wildcards, although up-and-comers such as Lola Styles, Bobby Thompson and Ollie Hudson will be able to witness what's required to reach the top of the amateur game.
"They can still see that they can surf competitively up to 65 or 70 years of age and some of those guys still surf very well," Mr Hudson said.
"The open division will be really good. They're the best amateur surfers in Australia."
Surfing Australia CEO Chris Mater said they are stoked to be able to run the championships in conjunction with Surfing New South Wales in such an epic wave-rich location as Port Macquarie.
"We can't wait to watch Australia's best surfers perform at the many great locations the region will provide."
The championships start on August 7.
