The forecast for Port Macquarie-Hastings and Kempsey will be mild until Wednesday with rain predicted followed by a drop in temperature overnight.
Thursday will be a brisk 16 degrees after an overnight low of 6 with the cool mornings to persist through until the weekend.
Further down the coast the cold front will keep temperatures as low as 14 at Taree and 13 at Gloucester on Thursday with a strong snow prediction for Barrington Tops.
The mercury will plummet at the Tops on Wednesday (June 9) with daytime temperatures not expected to rise above zero with -2 degrees overnight. Snow showers are expected into Thursday.
Snow is also predicted for Walcha with overnight temperatures on Thursday to drop to -3 degrees.
Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson Sarah Scully said the strong cold front will impact most eastern parts of the state from Tuesday night (June 8).
"On Tuesday evening we're forecasting a complex low pressure area developing over southern NSW. It is then expected to move off the east coast of NSW where it is forecast to intensify Wednesday into Thursday," Ms Scully said.
"We are also forecasting a band of rain right along the eastern seaboard from Tasmania up to southern Queensland.
"It's a very cold pool of air so there's potential for small hail, thunderstorms, showers and snow down to low levels including the central and northern tablelands of NSW."
Unfortunately for snow chasers, access to Barrington Tops remains closed while repairs continue on the Oxley Highway to Mount Seaviews following a series of landslips.
Major structural damage sustained during the March wet weather event has forced the ongoing closure of Barrington Tops Forest Road due to the high risk the road might collapse.
Protection Forester Mick Wilson said detailed technical surveys and significant structural works will be required to repair the damage.
"In the short term the road is at high risk of collapse, so it has been closed with physical barriers to protect the community's safety.
"We understand the importance of this road to the local community and visitors but we cannot stress enough how unsafe it is with currently sustained damage. Please adhere to all road closures, signs and barriers and avoid the area until repairs are complete," Mr Wilson said.
