Captain Michelle Smith's last-gasp strike saw the Warbirds take points off the Piranhas for the first time in the 2021 Port Macquarie-Hastings Hockey Association women's B-grade competition.
The Piranhas had previously only conceded one goal across their entire opening five matches.
"There are a lot of young players coming through and that's probably our best game so far," Smith said.
"We're starting to come together as a team and everyone's knowing where they belong and everyone's really positive. It's a great team to be a part of."
Smith was impressed with the overall performances of Rebecca Gittins and Jade Millward.
"Some of the young ones up the front including Jade had a really great game," she said.
"It's good to see those young kids coming through. There's about four or five of them that are still 16 and under."
The draw with Port City could provide Wauchope with the launchpad into the season.
"Our confidence is building in our team and it's starting to come through so by the end of the season we'll be quite competitive," Smith said.
