The home team took a firm hold of the match 38-14 against the Marlins at Stuart Park in Port Macquarie on Saturday, May 15.
Pirates assistant coach Chris Young said it was a rough start for the Pirates, followed by a secure second-half.
"It was a nervous start and the execution was a bit off, but the boys settled into the second half," he said.
"Our defence has been great for a few weeks now and that's probably something we can always fall back on. All the young blokes have a really good attitude towards defence and they are sticking their tackles.
"It's a new team so we are just trying to work on our execution at the moment and just gelling together. We're still at about 70 per cent with our attack so we will be going really well when we can pull that together."
