Possibly one of the smartest and most unusual weddings in Port Macquarie for some time was that of Mr and Mrs John Hayes in St Thomas' Church of England on Saturday, May 1. The bride, formerly Vicki Boston, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Les Boston. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs Hayes of Double Bay. The bride wore a white short sleeved slack suit topped with a white hooded and slitted cape, while the bridegroom and best man wore white suits and shoes.
Glamour title
Quotarians captured the glamour title at the surf club pavilion on Friday evening when, without conscious effort, a feeling that everything was nice about you happened with the women in command. Dot Middlebrook and Jean Bailey had decorated the pavilion with lovely floral arrangements.
Dr Barry Bettison, the guest speaker, talked about South Africa, where he had doctored for 20 years. Quota handed a cheque to district governor Edna West to assist Quota's project, the White Chain Committee, which helps to the blind.
Harbour work
In a 2am session in State Parliament late last week, Bruce Cowan, Member for Oxley, was given assurance that "every endeavour will be made" to meet his wishes for harbour works to be carried out at Port Macquarie. Mr Cowan, at 1.29am, said he wished to raise a matter of importance to his electorate, and he was allowed to continue: "It concerns the provision of satisfactory port works at Port Macquarie, to allow safe and permanent access to and from the port for the fishing fleet and pleasure craft. Some three years ago these works were approved for Port Macquarie and put on the priority list. Some months ago the Minister for Public Works announced he is having difficulty with a sum of $750,000 being spent for the small fishing fleet there. The situation is most unsatisfactory."
