Merrick is the current Australian Blind Bowlers Association national coach after he was "dobbed in" to take up the role.
"I've been coaching people to use the bowling arm for just over 10 years and I've been a coach for longer than that, but that was my main reason for becoming a coach," he said.
"I've been using the bowling arm for 18 years, but it was something different, something outside the box and something I saw merit in that you can go and help people."
He has been an interested onlooker in Port Macquarie this week as the ABBA national titles are played at Port City Bowling Club.
He admits his role as coach is not for a lifetime although he wishes he got into it a lot earlier.
"I'm popping up onto 70 now and I'll do it for as long as I can for as long as they want me there. If the board want me to keep going I'll keep going."
Merrick says he loves his fellow bowlers to bits and it's a pleasure to be their coach.
"Their ability for people that are vision impaired is awesome, it really is," he said.
"It's fantastic; I've only been in it a short time, but you can already feel the group is like a family.
"They all have varying degrees of being vision impaired and they're all there behind one another and you become a part of that.
"As I get to know more of them you come to realise it's not just about bowls, it's about their friendships and they build on these friendships.
"I consider it a privilege not a job."
