Lucy Bloom, as the guest speaker at the Boardroom Lunch on Friday [May 7], shared her career story and values learnt along the way.
Her career has ranged from being a jillaroo in country Victoria to running an advertising agency and taking the leap into the not for profit sector.
Lucy was the CEO of two international aid charities - one funded a network of hospitals and a midwifery school in Ethiopia and another funded schools and clinics in Cambodia.
She is also the founder of the world's first childbirth education program for men, as well being a self-published author and consultant.
Lucy said the truly successful people she worked with were courageous.
"I'm not talking about that scary courage - I'm talking about everyday courage," she said.
Lucy urged people to test their nerve with things that scared them, and in the process, get familiar with those things.
"Think of something you don't want to face and go do it," she said.
"I do believe that the number one fear in Australia - this is just my gut feeling - is fear of no," she said.
"People are so scared of no because it represents rejection."
She also encouraged people to adopt the Lucy Bloom risk management framework by asking themselves what was the worst that could happen and would somebody die.
"Kindness is also a crucial value of people who are really successful," Lucy said.
"Kindness is contagious."
Lucy said fun was another important value.
She said fun could be found in so many different ways.
The Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce and Hastings Business Women's Network presented the Boardroom Lunch at The Westport Club.
The event, with thanks to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, was supported by the NSW Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Fund.
