It will be a celebration of survival and life, coupled with a chance to boost awareness about breast cancer and raise funds for vital research.

"We are treating Sunday as in some sense a celebration that after everything that has happened, there is light at the end of the tunnel, we can do some fun things, help to raise awareness and support other people through their similar situations," Mrs Lamond said.

Mrs Lamond went to the GP after experiencing a dull ache on her right-hand side and she then had a mammogram.

Cancer was detected on her left side but she had no symptoms.

Mrs Lamond was just 40 when she received the breast cancer diagnosis in mid-2019.

The cancer cells were just under one centimetre when discovered, but by the time she had surgery, it was three times that size.

Surgery took the form of a wide local excision but the "margins weren't great". A margin is a rim of tissue removed surrounding the cancer cells.

Mrs Lamond went on to have a double mastectomy, after weighing up her options, followed by another surgery and reconstructive surgery.

Now with the surgeries at an end, the mother-of-two is looking forward to spending Mother's Day with her family, and some close friends, at the Mother's Day Classic.

Port Macquarie's foreshore will be awash with pink as the annual Mother's Day Classic returns on Sunday (May 9) in support of breast cancer research.

The event starts at Westport Park, follows the path along the waterfront to the Town Green and continues along the breakwall to Town Beach and returns to Westport Park.

Online registrations are preferred but people can register on the day with only cash payments accepted.

The Mother's Day Classic will go ahead rain, hail or shine with the formalities to begin about 8.30am.

The Classic is in its sixth year in Port Macquarie raising vital funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation's research projects and supports the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute.

Participants will join a special community coming together to honour the one in seven Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
