POLICE are investigating the circumstances around the death of a man in Port Macquarie overnight.

About 8.45pm on Tuesday, May 4, emergency services responded to reports that a man had set fire to a chair on a balcony of a unit on Hill Street, Port Macquarie.
A police spokesperson said a short time later, officers arrived to find the 54-year-old man with a fire extinguisher lying in a garden bed below the balcony.
Paramedics were called to the scene and attempted to revive the man but he was declared deceased.
Officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death under Strike Force Fernyhough.
As inquiries continue, anyone with information about the man's death is urged to contact Port Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
