THE next phase of Port Macquarie's Hastings Secondary College school upgrade has begun with the submission of a development application to commence works at the Westport campus.
The application with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council outlines a works program to deliver a relocated and upgraded administration office by repurposing Building L, a new front entrance and the refurbishment of Building A into flexible learning spaces.
The state government announced a major multi-million investment in an upgrade of the Hastings Secondary College campuses in October 2020.
Works are already underway at the Port Macquarie campus which will also include the establishment of an Australia-first pilot PCYC partnership as a part of the school's transformation.
The state-of-the-art multi-sports PCYC facility will provide two indoor competition courts for netball, basketball, futsal, badminton and volleyball. Gymnastic facilities, a youth hub and multi-purpose activity spaces will be included.
Plans are progressing on the lodgement of this "state-significant" development application for the Port Macquarie campus.
"The major upgrades at both the Westport and Port Macquarie campuses of Hastings Secondary College will support our current and future students," Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said.
Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the NSW Government was prioritising the needs of students in regional areas such as Port Macquarie.
"We want our students to be inspired when they come to school and the upgrade at Hastings Secondary College will do just that," Ms Mitchell said.
"It will provide the local community with high-quality education facilities for students and teachers."
In announcing the dual-campus upgrade last year, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the works would deliver state of the art education and learning opportunities for local students.
"The PCYC model was something Leslie Williams really pushed with us and we made it happen," the Premier said.
"The students will not only be the beneficiaries but continue to be the wonderful ambassadors of this school.
"No matter what a student does when they leave this place, when they say they've been at Hastings Secondary College, people will say what a great school.
"The upgrade is extremely major. It's an overhaul of the campus. This is a growing community and an important community."
