Like many others, I was heartened by the sense of community spirit which was evident.
I would particularly like to thank all those men and women of the Australian Defence Forces who came to our assistance. Without them the task would have been nigh impossible.
Several years ago, as a member of the SES, I was twice deployed to Cardwell, Queensland, to assist with the clean-up from Cyclone Yasi.
On one occasion we were sent to clear a stretch of road. There were four of us and we had two chainsaws.
Upon arrival we found dozens of large trees across the road for hundreds of metres.
It was like asking someone to chip away at the South Pole with a toothpick.
We sent for the army and they arrived in large numbers with large trucks, front-end loaders and back hoes. Job done.
The number of ADF personnel sent here was smaller and so was the machinery but the contribution of fit, young and dedicated men and women was invaluable.
Thank you to all helpers, local and imported.
