The Mid-North Coast has started the clean-up following a six-day deluge which saw the Hastings River swallow numerous locations dotted along the bike, run and swim legs.

An Ironman spokesperson said all options were on the table regarding the makeup of the event which include postponing until later in the year as well as cancelling the swim leg.

But they hope to have a full swim, bike, run event.

Flood waters are expected to continue to flow down the river and out into the ocean for weeks and with the race just over a month away, the clock is ticking.

Modifying the bike and run legs could also be considered, although nothing will be confirmed for at least a week or two.

"We have been working with council and the Local Organising Committee and will give it a bit more time until early next week," the spokesperson said.

"Once we know what the damage is then we can look at what needs to happen next."

A handful of Ironman events over the years have been forced to modify their courses with one in Western Australia transferring to a bike, run, bike format.

After not making it to the start line in 2020, Port Macquarie was set to welcome back Ironman Australia for the 35th running of the event.

"From Ironman Australia our thoughts are with everybody in the community," the spokesperson said.

"This event has 35 years of history and is an important event in the triathlon community, but the safety of the local community is the most important thing at this stage."
