Jackie Peachey will help Thomas Harrison in the club's quest for yet another premiership following a streak that has included appearances in the past four grand finals.
Peachey has been involved in women's rugby for the best part of four decades having grown up in New Zealand.
She was a member of the team who played against the inaugural women's team in Sydney in 1985 as a 15-year-old.
"I've seen women's rugby in Australia is growing to what it is today, but in the record books women's rugby didn't really kick off until 1990," she said.
"I come from a long line of rugby players; I've got nine brothers and only eight play and my younger brother didn't play so I filled his spot."
The 51-year-old said the decision to join Pirates came via a phone call from club stalwart Lisa Vogel.
"We live in Lorn, my son needed a team and Wauchope didn't have one so Pirates was closest and because I knew Lisa quite well, she said to come along," Peachey said.
An "old school" way of coaching will be one of the differences that many of the players will need to adjust to.
"They are a very successful team, but I bring a bit of old school coaching," she said.
"I'm learning their way and they're learning my way because a lot of the stuff they do now we never did when I was growing up.
"The game has tightened up and there are a lot more penalties and rules."
And while the different ways of coaching could take some time, Peachey was confident the team would be able to go one step further than their grand final loss to Coffs Harbour last year.
"They're quite a good team and can go a long way," she said.
