William, 79, from Kendall on the Mid North Coast, was due to visit a friend in Ballarat in western Victoria, but never arrived, Victoria Police said.
Instead, he was spotted 130 kilometres west of the Victorian city on Wednesday.
"We believe he travelled down to Victoria to see a friend in Ballarat," a spokesperson said.
"We believe he made it to Kilmore, but didn't make it to Ballarat."
Later that night police believe he was in the West Wyalong area, a five-and-a-half hour drive north of Kilmore, after making a call around 8.20pm.
He is travelling in a silver Lexus with NSW registration CID 60P.
Though police believe there's a chance he may be travelling back to Kendall, south of Port Macquarie, William is still missing and police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen him.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Ballarat Police on 03 5336 6000.
