Minister for Health Brad Hazzard made the announcement for the proposed station alongside Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams last November.
The project would become part of the Rural Ambulance Infrastructure Reconfiguration (RAIR) program with $10 million allocated for construction.
Mrs Williams said an appropriate site is still being sought.
"Health infrastructure is working with NSW Ambulance to determine an appropriate site in Lake Cathie for a new NSW ambulance station," Mrs Williams said.
"The health infrastructure project team is actively working to secure a new site for the new ambulance station in the coming months."
Minister Hazzard said a site would be acquired and the planning work would be complete within six to 12 months, while a new station would be operational in two to three years.
The Lake Cathie Progress Association (LCPA) has championed the need for emergency services facilities as part of the future planning in the area.
LCPA president Vern Warner said the association is strongly supporting the location of an ambulance station in the Lake Cathie or Bonny Hills.
"It's a facility that the progress association and the Lake Cathie residents have been lobbying for for many years," Mr Warner said.
"This area will double in population over the next five to ten years so the new ambulance station will be vital to servicing our two communities.
"Our preferred locations would be firstly, in the new retail space in area 14 opposite the Ocean Club Resort facility and secondly, down in the (to be built) light industrial area on the corner of Houston Mitchell Drive and Ocean Drive opposite the Lake Cathie Public School.
"The time for an ambulance to get to the Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills area is currently unacceptable so hopefully we will see the new ambulance station built and operational in the next three to four years.
"If it can be built before then it would be greatly appreciated."
The average response time for an ambulance to travel from Port Macquarie to Lake Cathie is 18 minutes.
