The Chatham High School Beef Battle will be the first of four shows for students to attend and participate in young judges competitions, paraders, led steer and heifer classes, a fit-out challenge, beef cattle quiz and barbecue competition.
The shows are the brainchild of Chatham High School agricultural teacher Yan Kleynhans in the wake of the cancellation of local agriculture shows for the second successive year.
"I wanted to give the kids a chance to participate... it will be their first show since Nabiac (show) last year," Yan said.
"We've got some good sponsors and amazing judges."
Students between Nabiac and Bellingen have been invited.
"I'm not sure how many we will have though," Yan said.
The competition will continue at Kendall Showground on February 27 and March 6 before returning to Taree on March 13.
A winner will be chosen at the final Taree event to represent the group at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
"We would determine a winner at the Wingham Show but it's not going ahead this year," Yan explained.
The shows won't be open to the public for COVID-19 safety purposes but a Facebook page was set up for the community to follow the progress.
