It's why he's still playing golf at the tender age of 90 and one of the reasons why he claimed a top three finish in a recent C-grade tournament at Port Macquarie Golf Club.
"An old champion used to say 'once you get the skills son, you never lose it and you'll never, ever get it to lose'," he said.
He hasn't ruled out the possibility of still playing 18 holes at 100.
"My mother died when she was 97 so she's left some genes somewhere and as long as I can walk I'll play," he said.
"You're never too old to play golf."
The club stalwart has been wandering around the course in Port Macquarie for the last half a century, chasing what some would describe as a "pesky white ball."
But he looks at it another way.
"I used to think that too, but there is a little ball on the ground saying please hit me and that's the hardest part ... hitting the ball," he said.
"It's the hardest game I ever played.
"You get your bad days, but you come back the next day and it's a different game."
After celebrating his 90th birthday on January 25, the amount of amber liquid he consumes now is in stark contrast to his younger days.
"I drank enough beer when I was young to last me a lifetime, so now we play golf on a Thursday and have two or three beers afterwards and that's it," he said.
