The pair say the breach of the US Capitol by a mob of protesters and the second impeachment of US president Trump came as no surprise after a year of political turmoil.

Dana and Megan are both from Maine in Northeastern United States, they moved to Australia in 2009 and 2014.

"Discussing politics in the US has become like a Thanksgiving table, we have just stopped talking about it," Mr Brestel said.

"There's no point debating it anymore and when it comes up the most sensible people are looking to segue out of it before it gets ugly. You're not talking about politics unless you're talking about tribal binary politics.

"When Australians wake up in the morning they anticipate local news or COVID developments, but when Megan and I wake up we apprehensively expect to hear about political violence in the US. It (Capitol violence) wasn't a surprise, it's sickening but not surprising.

"Trump has been disparaging the electoral process since he was elected. He didn't invent racism, he didn't invent opposition politics or xenophobia. He just gave his voters and Republicans the opportunity to be as nasty as they want to be, and they have done so.

"I'm quite happy for the impeachment precedings to go into the Biden presidency because I want to see Republican names on votes, to have them own it. Even if the impeachment doesn't throw Trump out of office, it can prevent him from taking office in future."

Mr Brestel said he supports president-elect Joe Biden, who is preparing to assume office on January 20 but only as the lesser of two unlikable candidates.

Megan Adams said she had been a proud Republican voter but had since moved to support the Democrats during the last four years.

"I was very involved in it for a good portion of my youth and still know people in the Republican Party. I see both sides of it," Ms Adams said.

"The fundamental lesson is that even if you get rid of Trump, there is still a question of how did he get to power in the first place. Half of Americans voted for him and how did we get to point where 50 per cent of Americans are okay with voting for this outcome.

"It's gotten to the point in America where people don't know who to believe anymore. It's really hard to know what's real and it's eroded the sense of trust.

"In the future I'm looking for a return to people who know what their job description is, the president should not be a king. Everyone is looking for a steadying force."
