Wauchope State Emergency Service (SES) received the most calls for assistance across New South Wales after thunderstorms impacted many parts of the state on December 27.

The storm dumped heavy rain and golf ball sized hail stones on a region between Wauchope and Telegraph Point, dangerous winds, lightning and thunder.

Cameron Street and parts of the Wauchope CBD experienced flash flooding while large trees were brought down and homes lost sheds and roofs.

The Wauchope SES said the 24 hours following the storm had proved challenging for crews who were required at more than 60 calls for assistance.

Many residents said they had not seen hail in Wauchope to the extent experienced on Sunday in more than 20 years.

Wauchope SES received help from the Camden Haven SES unit and the Port Macquarie crews while the Taree SES unit was on standby. Fire and Rescue Wauchope, Laurieton and Port Macquarie units with HAZMAT also assisted.

"We are very proud to be neighbored by such amazing people who turn out to assist within our cluster and beyond, so a huge thank you to those units," the Wauchope crew said.

"And to all of you in the community, thank you for your patience as we worked our way through your jobs, and your kind words of thanks as we moved around the town."

Thunderstorms are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the week.
