The continuation of the five metre-wide waterfront promenade from Lady Nelson Wharf through to Short Street is one of the key features.
The project also includes an upgraded foreshore rock wall, increased seating and picnic tables, grass areas for relaxing and playing, new bins and drinking fountains, and LED lights to improve security.
The community can look forward to a new and improved playground in 2021.
Officials, stakeholders and community members gathered for the opening of the Town Green West community space on Thursday (December 17).
Mayor Peta Pinson described the completed work as absolutely stunning.
"This is really going to be a family space and we have opened it up for that reason," she said.
Cr Pinson said it would be a place of celebration for the community.
Cowper MP Pat Conaghan, who pledged $1.5 million for the Town Green West project as an election promise, is impressed with the upgrade.
He said it made so much sense to have a wider foreshore path and additional seating.
"There's more improvements to the promenade to come - it will be extended as far as Kooloonbung Creek and the nature reserve to mark the town's bicentenary through a Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund grant," Mr Conaghan said.
The Town Green West work, including the playground, is a $2.4 million project, with $1.5 million provided by the federal government, and an additional $500,000 from the Town Centre Masterplan Sub-Committee through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD.
To deliver the bicentennial walkway, $400,000 was funded through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, which is jointly funded with the state government.
Town Centre Masterplan Sub-Committee member Tony Thorne said they were very happy the council team delivered such a high-quality job.
He said the sub-committee was thankful for the ongoing support of the CBD property owners and business owners towards these public works, and he also thanked Mr Conaghan and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack for their support.
Run Fest Port Macquarie race director Kevin Chilvers said the improvements would not only benefit runners but others enjoying the stunning foreshore.
"For the [Run Fest Port Macquarie] event, the runners will appreciate the extension - it's flat, it's fast and runners love running by the water," he said.
Meanwhile, community consultation is being consolidated to inform the new-look playground design.
Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2021.
