The first ever trawler in Port Macquarie was the `XLCR`, which was owned by Tom Radley, Jack Woodcock and others.
Tom had several sons in the industry - Claude, Mervin, Russell, Mick, Kenneth and Cecil.
Claude Radley, whilst living in Hollingsworth Street, Port Macquarie mortgaged his home to raise funds to build the co-op and adjacent wharf for use by the Radley family and others.
The trawler `XLCR` tied up at the regatta grounds until the co-op was initiated and still remains in Port Macquarie today, as a part of the town's history.
Taking this into consideration, we believe there can be no other name than Radley's Wharf - XLCR or Radley's XLCR Wharf.
The above information was offered by Mr Cliff Elford, a member of another long standing fishing family in Port Macquarie. They began in 1959 and are still actively involved in the industry today, 60 years on.
My info comes from being the daughter-in-law of the late Fred Denning, owner and operator of the Tacking Point Bait Shop incorporating Port Macquarie Sea Rescue and Radio Base, which his son William and I later operated 24/7 until the radio base was relocated to Town Beach.
Being a radio operator gives many opportunities to speak with people in the boating industry, with every conversation being documented .. making for many records.
I sincerely hope the names put forward will be given due consideration, as they are a part of the history of our beautiful town - Port Macquarie.
