The incident occurred at 2.14pm on Tuesday and services were not restored until 8.20pm on Wednesday evening.
More than 371 customers in the Lake Cathie area were directly impacted by the outage, NBN Co confirmed.
NBN Co head of state media Jane McNamara confirmed the nbn cable was extensively damaged by a "water company" completing works earlier in the week.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council confirmed the damage to the cable was caused by a private contractor during sewerage works and repairs have been undertaken at their cost.
"The damage caused a number of services to be impacted in the Lake Cathie area," Ms McNamara said.
"Our technicians worked to restore services as quickly as possible and we apologise to customers for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience."
NBN Co said it was a priority to fix the cable to ensure customers were reconnected as soon as possible.
Residents said home business operators were unable to conduct their business while school students could not upload assessments and payment services were limited at the Woolworths supermarket.
