The Mayor attended, which was appropriate given her leadership position.
During this meeting, a number of residents advocated for environmentally sustainable development planning that protects our beautiful and safe environment. This included raising concerns regarding population growth and climate change.
From the discussions arising, I have asked the mayor to clarify her position on whether council is:
1. prioritising growth over a safe and beautiful environment, and
2. unable shape this safe/beautiful future for our community because of state/other legislation.
I believe it is unhelpful and unnecessary for our elected leaders to hold views that pit the economy against a healthy environment. It's entirely possible to strategically support growth that is compatible with maintaining our beautiful surroundings.
In fact, ecologically sustainable industries present a huge opportunity for our local economy in a time of dire economic and ecological need.
I hope the Mayor will clarify her position on these matters for our community. I also hope that our residents will share their views on these matters with the Mayor and councillors.
