Lighthouse Beach has been marked early as the likely venue for the bodyboarding tournament from 6am on Sunday, September 20. Previous rounds have attracted around 30 boarders.

Association president Daniel Little said this weekend will host the fourth round of competition after a late start since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

"We had one competition just before COVID and then we were pretty much off the whole lockdown time, we've been back since restrictions have lifted," he said.

"We are looking at really good swell and conditions on the day. We are pretty sure it will be at Lighthouse Beach, depending on how strong the wind is.

"This year we are picking the location based on the best surf and not just going to the same location each time. We want to get the best out of the competition, so you go where the best surf and standard of competition are.

"Last round attracted around 30 people and this weekend we are expecting a lot more. We have put in a new pro division which anyone can go in, that also has a $150 cash prize in it.

"We want to encourage a few more people to come out and get among it. Get the kids out of the house and get them active again."

Competition divisions include mini-grommets for under 11s, grommets under 13s, cadets under 15s, juniors under 18s, open, womens, masters and the new pro division.

Mr Little said a recent shark attack at Shelly Beach has raised some concerns about shark activity.

"I understand there is a high level of risk when you surf but sharks have been around forever. The only reason there seem to be more is we see more of them through social media," he said.

"For younger kids, they might be more concerned about sharks but there are things you can do to create a positive situation.

"We have professional guys to give advice like water safety, surfing with a buddy and things like that."

The Association is also gearing up for the annual David 'Goose' Gosby Memorial Bodyboarding Competition on October 31.

"We've got thirty-plus registrations already from mostly outsiders and we really encourage Port Macquarie locals to get on board and register," said Mr Little.

"There is limited spots with about 12 to 15 people per division and we are already nearly half full of entries.

"The memorial was originally planned to coincide with nationals this year however those nationals have been cancelled due to travel restrictions. But a positive is that it's been announced to be held in Port Macquarie in 2021."

Innervision Surf N Skate, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Flower Hotels are all sponsoring the Association in hosting bodyboarding events.
