The $6 million project is being funded by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and includes upgrades to the stormwater network, including a stormwater pollution trap at Kooloonbung Creek, removal of aging water pipes and the installation of higher capacity water mains.
The 800 metres of roadway between Hastings River Drive and Horton St will be resurfaced, some of the footpaths and kerbs will be upgraded, there will be an extension of the right hand turning lane into Hastings River Drive and changes to on-street parking.
Director Dan Bylsma said the upgrade to Gordon St is an important strategic traffic and stormwater management project.
"Gordon Street is one of our busiest main roads carrying more than 30,000 vehicles a day. The intersection with Hastings River Drive is our regions third busiest," Mr Bylsma said.
"The road is in need of upgrading to reduce ongoing maintenance costs, improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety to cater for our growing community.
"Gordon St also experiences problems with stormwater runoff and localised flooding during heavy rain, so it is important that we upgrade the aging infrastructure to minimise potential impacts to surrounding businesses and residents."
The project is in the design phase with construction expected to commence in April 2021. It is expected to take 7-9 months to complete.
"We are currently engaging with surrounding businesses to discuss how we minimise the impact as much as possible, including any changes to on-street parking," Mr Bylsma said.
"Projects of this scale do have a community impact, however are extremely important in providing quality infrastructure to support our growing community now and into the future."
