The Vikings Under 16s ran into the grand final as favourites against the Southern Cross Marlins at Stuart Park on September 5. The Vikings hadn't dropped a game all season and added a convincing 24-10 win against the Marlins.
Under 16s coach Andrew Briscoe said he was very relieved with the result.
"The boys were undefeated through the year and they improved through the year. Although I was expecting it, I was relieved that we were able to get the result and push the score out in the final minutes," Mr Briscoe said.
"The game was closer than what the score indicated. Our forwards held their own and our game plan was to keep our structure to score tries.
"It was a good effort from everyone across the paddock. I believed we had the better team and the boys backed that up by playing well.
"Most of our boys are in the age group of being quite young last year, older this year in under 16s and we may struggle a bit more next year in the under 18s. We tend to have a good year each second year.
"Because we also won the under 14s grand final I think that shows we have a good opportunity to follow up finals in the under 14s and under 16s as players go up the grades. The club itself feels very strong with the kids coming through."
The Hastings Valley Vikings under 14s may have provided some inspiration to the older teams victory with a 22-0 win against the SCU Marlins just an hour before.
Under 14s coach Andrew Kable said the kids were outstanding in their third under 14s grand final outing.
"To finally get a victory after being runners up for the last two seasons was excellent," he said.
"It's a shortened season but we have been building on a running style of game. They were really entertaining to watch.
"A lot of the kids have been together for four or five years, we're building a great culture at the club and the kids are learning that you can have a great time while achieving your goals."
