The August/September school holiday weather in Port Macquarie has been ideal for visitors as well as locals.
Many have been going to the beaches at a time when most of New South Wales has been experiencing cold conditions.
A Speck on the horizon
The Endeavour II sailed past Port Macquarie last week, but few people were able to see the replica of Captain Cook's craft.
It was spotted about 9.30am yesterday under full sail, about seven miles off shore, battling its way through 15-20 foot waves towards its next anchorage at Coffs Harbour.
It had earlier been hoped that the Endeavour II would weigh anchor at Port Macquarie, but it was found that the harbour bar here made this impossible.
Later plans for the replica to tie up in the Camden Haven were also scrapped.
So the only view of the Endeavour II gained by Port Macquarie residents was a speck on the horizon.
Big boost for retirement village
A well-attended monthly meeting of the Senior Citizen's Welfare Committee, held Tuesday night, received a big boost when Mrs Westerweller made a donation of the complete cost, to the committee, of a self-contained home unit, on behalf of Alderman Westerweller and herself.
A letter was received from the Lions Club of Port Macquarie advising they have adopted the Garden Village as their project for the year.
The club will immediately set to work to raise funds to build two self-contained units.
A further letter was received from the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie advising they, too, have adopted Garden Village as their project for this year.
A letter was read from Bruce Cowan, MLA, advising that he hopes to finalise gazettal of land in Morton Street, West Port Macquarie, by the end of September.
The five acre site is ideal for the village.
A decision was made that the first construction should be a block of eight self-contained home units built around a lawn courtyard and set in gardens.
The buildings would be cream brick with a green tiled roof.
The units would consist of a large bedroom, a bathroom and toilet, a large lounge/dining room and a modern kitchen.
Board riders club formed
The formation and first meeting of the Port Macquarie Boardriders Club last Friday night, marked one step further for surfing in this district.
As yet the club is in its early stages but membership is strong and enthusiasm towards competition and contests between neighbouring clubs is very keen.
The first round of the club championships should be held in the next three weeks.
The championships will be decided through a series of contests held on the first Sunday of every month.
Members competing will be judged on a handicapped points system to give each individual a fair chance.
Although the first inter-club visit isn't finalised, plans are being made to arrange a meet with Coffs Harbour as soon as the club has settled down.
Friday night's inaugural meeting was very successful and a committee was elected with Jeff Chelman elected as president.
As membership is close to capacity only a few more board riders can join.
