Port Macquarie-Hastings Council advises work is underway and expected to take around three weeks to complete.

Three car parks are out of action as the space is being used as a work site.

The stairs and viewing platform are part of the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk upgrade.

A Port Macquarie resident said the coastal walk improvements were wonderful.

"I came here from Bondi so I used to walk the Bondi to Bronte walk every morning and that was always chock-a-block but this is far prettier," she said.

"A lot of people are coming to Port now to spend the weekend and doing a walk."

Sections of the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk have been progressively upgraded.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has allocated $997,000 for the upgrades with the state government contributing $765,000.

Completed stretches of the coastal walk upgrade can be found at Westport Park, stage one of the Charlie Uptin to Flagstaff Hill section and Kenny Walk.

The Charlie Uptin Walk to Flagstaff Hill stage two upgrade is due for completion in late August.

It will deliver a new boardwalk section leading to flagstaff bridge and a wider concrete path.

Key upgrades to the Doctors Walk section are also scheduled for completion in late August.

There will be path widening and new handrails in sections, improved signs, a drinking fountain and new boardwalk section at the southern end of Oxley Beach.

Port Macquarie Coastal Walk spans nine kilometres from Westport Park to Tacking Point Lighthouse.
