The man was surfing off the north point at Flynns Beach when his board's leg rope snapped, resulting in him being swept dangerously close to rocks.
The off-duty volunteers also prepared appropriate equipment to help rescue the man.
Mr Turnham said the man's experience in the surf proved to be beneficial, as he was able to navigate his way around the heavy swell and rocks to make it back to shore.
"Luckily he was an experienced surfer who had some knowledge about the currents," he said.
In the process of the surfer battling against the swell and current he lost his surfboard.
Mr Turnham said the key message for people to take away from the incident is to be mindful of their ability and knowledge of the surf before they decide to enter the water.
"Perhaps even surf with a friend so there's always someone there with you," he said.
"Make sure you let someone else know where you're going."
Port Macquarie ALS is warning the community to take care due to a hazardous surf warning.
Swell off the coastline is expected to ease throughout Wednesday, August 11.
