The newly formed OzFish Lake Cathie Chapter is looking for more members to boost benefits to recreational fishing, as well as ideas for areas the community would like to see restored as important fishing destinations.
The chapter's president, Dave Curry, said the group grew out of concerns and interest in being able to restore fish life and habitat in the area.
"We are looking at the local area and where the fish population can be improved by any efforts," he said.
OzFish is a national not-for-profit with a mission to get recreational fishers actively involved in keeping their waterways healthy and ensuring fishing thrives.
Mr Curry said Lake Cathie was in the middle of the chapter's footprint but the group didn't want to confine its reach just to that estuary.
OzFish Lake Cathie Chapter's geographic footprint extends along the Hastings River to Long Flat, as well as Limeburners Creek, Lake Cathie estuary, Watson Taylor Lake, the Camden Haven River to the Kendall area and along the beaches.
Mr Curry said the chapter was just getting started.
"We need people to help us and we need people to join," he said.
The group will then work to identify areas of concern and potential projects.
OzFish Lake Cathie Chapter is taking guidance from scientists and environmental experts.
There are more than 40 OzFish chapters of recreational fishers across Australia volunteering their time to improve fish habitat.
OzFish supports fishers in projects ranging from shellfish reef restoration to replacing barriers to fish passage, restoring seagrass, planting riverbanks and clean-ups of favourite fishing spots.
OzFish adult membership costs $25.
