The playground revamp is in the planning stages with construction expected to begin early in 2021.

Port Macquarie mother-of-two Jemma Mooney told The Port News the playground equipment was not the best at the moment.

"It's such a busy area and there's not a lot of equipment here for the amount of traffic that does access it, which is a shame because it's a beautiful location," she said about the playground.

Mrs Mooney would like to see shade and more play equipment, including play equipment for younger children.

She said playgrounds were very important.

"Children love to play and adults love to see their children happy," Mrs Mooney said.

Holidaymakers Jason Edwards and Siobhan Avarl believe Town Green playground could do with more swings, shade sails and a mix of play equipment to cater for children of all ages, including younger children.

The couple brought their two-year-old Imogen Edwards to the playground on Monday, August 3.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will consult further with the community later in 2020 about the playground design.

The Town Green playground upgrade forms stage two of the Town Green west improvements.

The Town Green west stage one upgrade work starts this week.

The five-metre wide waterfront promenade will be continued with a shared path from Lady Nelson Wharf through to Short Street and the boardwalk.

The foreshore rock wall will be upgraded, and the reserve area will be improved with more seats and picnic tables, as well as new grassed areas, more bins and LED lights.

Funding for the project has been provided by the Town Centre Masterplan Committee through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD, and the federal government.
