But that's exactly what happened for newly married Bellevue Gardens couple Bill and Heather Wallace.
Bill, 78, and Heather, 76, tied the knot in front of seven friends and marriage celebrant Margo Smith on July 29.
And they believe that more people should continue to look for romance and companionship in their latter years.
The couple said just because you are considered "old", it doesn't mean that love is dead.
"I think people are still looking for romance and love," Heather said.
"And while you don't really expect it, you can find love again.
"We understand that we are not teenagers - we're more like sen-agers.
"So you shouldn't stop looking for a relationship."
The couple said the village residents had given them some gentle ribbing during the early stages of the relationship but their wedding was met with plenty of support.
Heather's three sons, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren were also supportive of their marriage while Bill said he'd been welcomed with open arms by the family.
"It makes you feel really good in the heart (to be accepted by Heather's family)," he added.
Bill moved into Bellevue Gardens with his late wife almost seven years ago while Heather arrived nearly five years ago.
The village's vibrant social and sporting calendar meant that they mixed in the same circles.
Bill said he had moved from Sydney to Emerald Downs but found the tasks of living in a bigger house too onerous.
Heather moved from Inverell with the support of two of her sons who live in Port Macquarie.
The social gatherings and bowls days meant the couple knew each other for a number of years.
"We really didn't get to know each other until about 18 months ago," Bill said.
"The village regularly attends the pictures and both Heather and I could not go along on this one particular day.
"So I said: how would you like to go and see that movie? - which she accepted.
"Unfortunately, I got the start time wrong by about three hours so we ended up having lunch and chatting away.
"That first date, led to a second date and then a third date.
"We just got on really well. We are very, very happy together," he said.
The topic of getting married surfaced while they were on a trip to Coffs Harbour. The couple decided that they felt more comfortable getting married than "just living together".
And there wasn't a traditional proposal either, Heather said.
"We just talked about it and decided it was the right thing to do."
And as for any criticism about their new found love, Bill has the perfect response.
"We don't feel old. It may take us a bit longer to walk to the top of the hill but we still get there," he said.
"We certainly don't think we're too old."
The couple plan to do some more travelling once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted with a trip to the Barrier Reef on the cards.
They were also forced to postpone their honeymoon.
