PORT City Breakers didn't play to the conditions and paid the price in an 18-0 defeat at the hands of Wingham at Woods Street on Saturday.
In their under-18 round two Group 3 rugby league clash, the Breakers had a few near misses, but didn't take their opportunities.
Coach Dan Kemp knows they now have some ground to make up with only seven matches remaining before the finals in a shortened competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"They're going to have to start winning, aren't they; it's as simple as that, but they go down swinging every week," he said.
"They had a disallowed try at the end of the first half, dropped the ball on the next play and then (Wingham) went the length and scored and we never got back in it.
"We were incredibly committed and if our try doesn't get disallowed it's 6-0 and we're on our way, but that's footy - it's about inches and moments."
Kemp was impressed with the effort of his forwards, led by captain Matt Burge in the middle of the field.
"It was very physical; both sides deserve credit for that ... they bashed each other," he said.
"We took the poorer options in the wet weather, tried to play a bit expansive and our kicking game was nowhere near as good as theirs which are fundamentals of wet weather footy."
Luke Mapstone and Ryan Moloney impressed with Moloney again backing up after playing in an under-16 match earlier in the day.
"Ryan again played for us and didn't look out of place," Kemp said.
The Breakers now face a must-win clash against Wauchope next weekend and what they do with the football undoubtedly will be the focus at training this week.
"We need to get our kicking game better, but that's experience ... it's been a while since they played a wet weather game," Kemp said.
"Overall it was a pretty good contest of under-18 footy - they just got us."
