Mid North Coast photographer Josh Woods managed to catch several shots of the moment from a nearby headland.
Every year, whales migrate along the NSW coastline, and thousands of whale watchers flock to the area to see them.
The great white whale Migaloo was recently spotted nearby, but the famous mammal managed to avoid most of the spotlight.
The season runs through to November, so there is still time to catch a glimpse during this year's migration.
