I am encouraging stakeholders to participate in consultations for the next NSW strategy for seniors, a roadmap for the ageing population.
The NSW Government wants older people to make the most of living longer and to be active and involved in their communities.
To ensure we are meeting the future needs of our seniors we want to hear from them directly as they have the experience and knowledge to shape the best policy.
Consultations are being held via online group forums and the NSW Government Have Your Say website until June 30 due to the restrictions on face-to-face meetings caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Surveys are also being distributed through the NSW Office of Local Government, retirement villages and ageing peak bodies to ensure as many seniors as possible are included in the consultation process.
Consultations will look at areas of seniors' lives such as health and wellbeing, working and retirement, housing choices, getting around and how to create more inclusive communities.
The strategy for seniors will be a whole-of-government, whole-of-community plan addressing those needs.
The strategy for seniors will be launched in 2021 and people can take part at www.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say or contact (02) 8753 9307.
Homes can be an asbestos hotspot
The NSW Government has released an awareness campaign to remind DIY enthusiasts to plan, prepare and check for asbestos if they are renovating an old home.
Renovation works may disturb asbestos, particularly in houses and sheds built before 1990, and the tagline Asbestos lurks in more places than you think, reminds DIY renovators and tradies to check for asbestos before renovating or building.
Even though it has been banned in Australia since 2003, at the height of its use asbestos was in over 3,000 products with many of these products still in homes and workplaces - especially those built before 1990.
Homeowners are being encouraged to make use of Government's Asbestos Finder asbestos.nsw.gov.au or arrange an assessment from a licensed asbestos assessor before starting a renovation to best protect your family, neighbours and the wider community.
