The Town Green west upgrade will achieve a regionally significant offering for the community by increasing connectivity through the CBD from Westport Park to the beaches.
Work to the tune of $2 million is expected to start in July and will be by the Town Centre Masterplan Committee (through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD) and the Federal Government through a Community Development Grant.
Detailed designs are being completed with the upgrade to replicate the aesthetic elements of Town Green east works from five metre wide foreshore promenade shared path extension from Lady Nelson Wharf to Short St; upgrading of the foreshore rock revetment wall; new LED lighting; feature pavement nodes; new seating, bins, table settings and drinking fountain; and installation of new turf and irrigation.
There will also be an upgrade of the popular Town Green playground area.
Director Dan Bylsma said the works will significantly improve access and connectivity throughout the foreshore reserve; provide better space for events and play.
"It's another vital link in the upgrade of our Coastal Walk and will pick up from Town Green east at Lady Nelson Wharf down to the fishing charters," he said.
The Town Green west upgrade aligns with council's Recreation Action Plan 2017-2025, Coastal Walk Master Plan and the Town Centre Master Plan 2013.
"The project will deliver a much-improved facility for the public and provide greater connectivity along the foreshore between other newly constructed Town Centre projects. In addition to the foreshore reserve works, an upgrade to the Town Green playground is planned to complete this stage of the Town Centre Master Plan," Mr Bylsma said.
Works are expected to be completed by December with the playground upgrade to commence in early 2021.
Council will engage with the community regarding the playground design.
