The location of public toilets is probably not high on your agenda.
But accessible toilets with adult change table facilities make all the difference to some people living with a disability, such as muscular dystrophy, and their carers.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has agreed to call on the state government to provide adult change table facilities along NSW highways.
The council will write to Families, Communities and Disability Services Minister Gareth Ward, Transport and Roads Minister Andrew Constance, opposition spokesperson for disability inclusion Penny Sharpe, Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams and Oxley MP Melinda Pavey.
Cr Peter Alley raised the matter at the March 18 council meeting.
Cr Alley said a trip to Sydney, Brisbane or anywhere in NSW was difficult for some people in our community due to a lack of public adult change table facilities.
He said people with a disability needed to be part of our community.
An all-access amenities block in Port Macquarie was described as a great step forward for people with a disability in the region when it opened in September 2019.
The accessible toilet block in the Plaza Car Park includes a height-adjustable adult change table and overhead gantry hoist, as well as wheelchair-friendly toilet facilities.
Cr Alley said it was a great facility.
It is hoped to install similar facilities in the Camden Haven and Wauchope in years to come.
"But it doesn't solve the problem I am talking about and that is people in our community need to be able to go on holidays elsewhere in NSW," he said about access to adult change table facilities.
Cr Alley made these comments before Australians were urged to stay at home unless absolutely necessary to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Cr Alley said he raised the matter of adult change table facilities along NSW highways for lobbying purposes.
"I think we should be encouraging the state government to provide some of these facilities up and down the coast," he said.
