And while the party has been put on hold, Lexie and Lacee Williams of Port Macquarie made sure they had something to celebrate by earning their learner's licence.
The twins had originally scheduled to hold two separate events, a paintball party and big beauty day with friends.
Lacee, a year 10 student at MacKillop College, said they had cancelled their original plans a week ago to comply with the COVID-19 restrictions.
"This year we had planned to do things with our friends because turning 16 is a big year. We'd planned them for probably about a month," she said.
"My friends and I had planned to have a big beauty day at my house but we both knew that restrictions were coming and we made the final decision last week to call it off.
"We just had a birthday at home with family instead and got our Ls. Getting them definitely creates a bit more normality to complete that part of your life."
Her sister, Lexie, a year 10 student at St Joseph's Regional College said she had originally planned to play paintball with friends.
"We were obviously really concerned about getting sick but also we were worried about not getting to celebrate as well," she said.
"Getting our learner's plates did make me feel better about not seeing my friends and stuff. Even though everyone is self-isolating you can still call your friends on your phone or online."
Both girls said celebrating a birthday by finishing school work and getting learner plates is 'a bit weird', but was always the right choice to make.
