The pool was built in 1965 and experiences problems with water leakage, due to its ageing infrastructure.
Loss of water at Port Macquarie Pool is due to evaporation, splashing and the structural leak.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's group manager Liam Bulley said unfortunately the pool has cracks in numerous locations and the whole body of the pool is not structurally intact.
Total water consumption at the pool each day, Mr Bulley said is about 30,000 litres.
"The total consumption includes flushing of toilets, use of showers and basin taps in the bathrooms, outside water use, and topping up the pool for evaporation and splashing with people jumping in and out, as well as loss due to leakage," he said.
However, Mr Bulley said thanks to a new initiative implemented by council, a lot of the water is actually captured and recirculated through the pool filtration system and back into the pool for reuse.
The pool at Port Macquarie, Mr Bulley said, differs from other older pools such as Wauchope, where there is a drainage system situated around the outside of the pool to capture the lost water.
Recently a well was discovered near the 25 metre pool at Port Macquarie, which is enabling a lot of the water to be captured and put through the filtration system for reuse.
In the last month alone, each day the new system has captured five and a half thousand litres for reuse.
"It's a significant amount and this coincides with one of the busiest months at the pool for the year," Mr Bulley said.
Mr Bulley said the statistic equates to about 15 litres saved from each pool user on a daily basis.
Council has also installed a 22,000 litre rainwater tank, to capture water runoff from the roofs and top up the pools. The tank was installed in late January.
In the last financial year, 150,000 people used the Port Macquarie Pool. This was an increase from 140,000 within the 2017/2018 financial year.
Mr Bulley said planning for the new aquatic facility is underway, after the Macquarie Park site was confirmed as the community's proffered location in 2019.
A council steering group has been established and members are working to progress a strategic concept for the facility.
