Steve Cherry has taken over the reins of the Wrinkled Horns for season 2020.
Golden Oldies rugby is traditionally concerned with fun, friendship and fraternity.
"Rugby really comes second in our ethos," Cherry said. "We have a great bunch of guys who enjoy each other's company.
"Socialising is at the heart of the Horns but every now and then we do enjoy putting on the Viking colours and waddle around the paddock."
The Wrinkled Horns are about to enter their 23rd season of GO rugby this year when they line up at the Seaside Classic on March 7 at Stuart Park.
"We started two years after the main Viking Club was formed and have had some real characters put on a jumper in that time," Cherry said.
"World War 2 veteran Noel Crozier gave up playing just before his 90th birthday.
"He was entitled, because of his age, to wear purple shirts which according to Golden Oldies rules made him ineligible to be touched when in possession.
"He was often our go to man," Cherry said.
Other notable Wrinklies who have turned out in the past include Viking founder, Steve Arnold, former Smithfield hard man Ray Toomey, Port Macquarie cricketer "swerving" Merv Bourke, Dundas Valley's greatest ever, Dave Todd and local businessman and Settlers Inn host, Alistair Flower.
Traditionally Golden Oldies matches always end in a draw but the Horns are unable to boast an undefeated record.
"Sadly we did lose a game some years back," Cherry said. "The guys were distracted that day. We were playing the female Vikings team the mighty Helgas."
Viking Club legend - the late Dave McCormack - was the inspiration behind the formation of the Wrinkled Horns all those years ago but he soon passed the mantle over to local schoolteacher Lance Kedward.
Kedward had a 21 year stint as Head Horn but is now happily relegated to a helping role behind Cherry.
"I love the job," Cherry said. "We have a great network of guys who cover just about every trade and we also have a great bunch of very loyal sponsors whose support keeps us on the paddock.
"I'm in for the long haul as Big Horn because I'm keen to break Lance's record. I only need another 22 years in the job and it's mine."
Anyone keen on joining the Wrinkled Horns will be made most welcome. Contact Steve Cherry on 0411 297 771 to register your interest.
