The possibilities of GJ Coles opening a supermarket in Port Macquarie one day in the future were advanced a stage further with the announcement this week confirming the purchase by them of a block of land in the Kooloonbung reclamation scheme area.

The block is that on which at present stands the temporary office of the developer, Mr. Peter Vaggelas, who closed the deal with Coles a few weeks ago.
It is situated diagonally opposite (in a south easterly direction) The Plaza building which houses several shops as well as a Woolworths supermarket. Like the Plaza area, the land Coles have bought is all reclaimed land within the Kooloonbung reclamation scheme.
It would be one of the most readily accessible areas, from all parts of Port Macquarie, if something in the nature of a supermarket is erected there one day. Coles recently opened a store in Taree which has often been described as the most outstanding north of the Sydney area.
No promise has been made, nor any indication given, of anything likely to be done here in the immediate future.
Nippers' overwhelming victory
Port Macquarie's juvenile surf lifesavers recorded an overwhelming victory in the Mid North Coast Branch Juvenile Surf Championships at Flynn's Beach on Sunday when they scored 111 points.
The club's major points were scored in the swimming section where on numerous occasions the club filled all three places.
Outstanding wins were those of Mark Waters, who won the 13 years old surf, a member of the winning 13 years old relay team, was placed second in the sprint, and with Keith March easily won the senior R. and R. event, carried the banner in the winning march past team and was a member of the chariot team which gained second place.
Marbuk Park opened
The Minister for Tourism, Mr. E. A. Willis, officially opened Marbuk Park, Port Macquarie's latest tourist attraction before a large crowd on Sunday.
Mr. Willis was conveyed to the gate of the park in a horse-drawn buggy. The Minister was shown around the park by Marbuk's owner, Mr. Ken Underwood.
He saw tiger snakes being milked of their venom and also saw
"Mumma", the crocodile, being fed. After seeing "Mumma's" lunges with an open mouth for the food thrown to her, the Minister commented that the crocodile's manners were not so good.
The opening ceremonies were performed in a large tent, which was soon filled with guests invited to the opening. As well as the Port Macquarie and Hastings councils, there were representatives present from many of the area's business houses, accommodation centres and other tourist attractions.
Mr. Willis said Marbuk Park wasn't a place where just the needs of the customers or the needs of the animals were met.
At Marbuk, he said, these things are blended in a most attractive manner to provide a first class destination area.
The Minister also complimented Mr. Underwood on the skilful blending of the architecture to merge old-Australia with modem ideas and having both fitting in with the landscape.
He wished the Underwood's the best of success and declared the park officially open.
