Apprentice jockey Mikayla Weir had to duck and weave between runners in the straight but the Tony Ball galloper responded well to score in the last stride in the Winning Post Function Centre Class 1 & Maiden Plate over 2018m.
The only surprising part of the win was the starting price but this was helped by Newcastle's Ghenghis Khan being a $1.30 favourite, it finishing fifth for trainer Jason Deamer, he shortly after the race saying his charge would now be spelled.
But nothing could be taken away from Senatorial, part-owned by Taree Coastline Credit Union manager Jeff Haisall and a band of fellow employees who again celebrated their luck in having a dual winner in their first foray into racehorse ownership.
"How long has this been going on...it is easy," Haisall joked while celebrating in the club's hospitality lounge with other owners, some holding babies.
Ball said Weir told him after the race that Senatorial was a "dead-set stayer", she having ridden the gelding five times, also for its two wins.
Senatorial got away better than when it won at the track over 1600m a fortnight earlier, settled well, but in the straight when making up about eight lengths she had to switch course on a number of occasions before sweeping to the lead to score by a half-head in being only two places off the fence.
The Hinchinbrook gelding was sold as a yearling for about $200,000 but the present battling owners only paid $7000 to enjoy the racing caper.
Only two local gallopers won at the meeting dominated by visitors but the other winner had plenty of admirers under the ownership banner of River Street Fishing Club and the mob involved gave four-year-old gelding New Major ($3.90) an almighty roar in coming back to the winner's stall.
The former Victorian was having its second local start for Wayne Wilkes in the TAB Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1312m and scored by a length in the capable hands of top country jockey Andrew Gibbons.
Gibbons said he had a perfect run, got going early, as he didn't was to be left "flat-footed".
He didn't have the same luck in running early with three-year-old filly Hibern ($11), trained at Newcastle by Kris Lees, but she after a wide run back in the field rattled home late to score by a head in the Conferences and Christenings at MVRC Maiden Plate over 1912m.
She finished two strides to one to snatch victory from $1.60 favourite Toguchi, trained at Wyong by Kim Waugh.
