Beechwood Hotel Barbarians and defending champions Wauchope RSL will battle it out on Oxley Oval in a qualifying round this Saturday at noon on January 25.

Both teams are keen to book a place in the big dance against the Port City Leagues Magpies at Oxley Oval on Australia Day. That game starts at 3.30pm.

Hastings River District Cricket Association president Craig Lobegeier said the qualifying match and grand final would both be highly competitive.

"It'll be a good day out in Port Macquarie. The three teams that are in the running for the finals are all really good teams and they all have definite strengths," he said.

"It has been a crowd pleaser on Australia Day in the past and the advantage of holding it at Oxley this year is that it's on the beach and people can drop in.

"It will be a good spectacle and we would hope to get a good crowd."

Port City Leagues Magpies blitzed Macquarie Hotel Cricket Club at Oxley Oval during game one on January 15, despite the lights going out at the ground in the second innings.

A Port Macquarie-Hastings Council spokesman on Monday said engineers are in the process of fixing an overheating fault with the lights.

"We want to maximise the use of the lights in the future and we have thoughts about having the under 18s playing on Friday nights instead of on the weekend," said Mr Lobegeier.

"We are also interested in having a presidents versus vice-presidents game to reward some of the presidents who do a good job for their clubs."
