The Hastings Secondary College robotics team have joined the Eureka Explorer STEM workshops.
The team shared its knowledge of aqua robotics with local and visiting primary school-aged children on January 14. The workshop covered topics including, how to build and operate an aqua robot to complete a challenge.
In 2019, the College team were crowned Pacific Regional Champions in New Zealand and will now travel to the USA to compete in the Sea Perch competition that involves solving real life problems facing our oceans.
The proceeds from the Eureka Explorer workshop are being donated to the robotics team to help fund their trip to the USA, said Eureka Explorers managing director Petriea Skitek.
"This is a win-win scenario for our regional girls and boys in robotics where primary school kids are taught and mentored by the award-winning high schoolers as part of their fundraising for their USA trip," she said.
"The robotics team started with $20 to build a robot which had to successfully navigate a number of hoops, agility challenges and pick up objects in order to win the regional crown.
"So not only are the team teaching our young people about robotics, they are also teaching them about creative and critical thinking, and the importance of working together to achieve a goal."
To help the Robotics team reach their USA goal, a second fundraising workshop was held on primary aged school children are encouraged to register for the next Aqua Robotics fundraiser workshop on Tuesday January 21.
