It's why a 1400-kilometre trip in March from Newcastle to Noosa for the Tour De Cure will be an emotional one as riders aim to raise money to put towards cancer research.
"Unfortunately with the second brother his diagnosis came quite late and it wasn't a matter of seeing a mole or something, they never found the primary source," Parry said.
"Everyone was just devastated.
"The second brother only found out the week after my first brother's funeral so it gutted the whole family really.
"To know he wouldn't last the year was pretty confronting."
With son Bennett Powell in her corner, Parry joined the crew from Port Macquarie who are set to take the challenge head-on.
A little over 18 months ago Parry had never ridden a bike. Soon she will be riding up to 200 kilometres a day for nine days.
"I never got on a bike until August 2018; I'd never been on a road bike before," she said.
Parry knows the uncomfortable feeling that will follow will be nothing compared to those suffering from cancer.
"Your discomfort is temporary and there's going to be an end and it's going to be a favourable end whereas these guys not always have that," she said.
"I've thought 'why am I doing this' so many times.
"When that happens you've got to go back to why you're doing it and think of the people you've lost."
Parry will join former work colleague Lyn Stewart in the ride.
"I met her through (coach) Mel (Cockshutt) and Bennett because Lyn was involved with the triathlon community," she said.
If you wish to contribute to the fundraising efforts, events coming up are a Bunnings barbecue on January 25, Charity Golf Day at Wauchope Country Club on February 29 and the Black Tyre Ball on April 18 at Panthers.
