Fire crews assisted by aerial water bombers are targeting the blaze which is burning 20km to the north-east of Taree.
The fire is burning in a south-westerly direction towards Lansdowne. There are currently no properties under threat and it is being controlled.
At 7pm, existing campers were told to leave the area which is now closed.
Anyone in the broader area has been urged to avoid nearby roads as firefighters will be using these as control lines and for access to the fire.
On Monday evening, the fire had burned across 27 hectares.
Another fire on the Harrington Trail on the Crowdy Bay National Park also flared up on Monday afternoon as hot and blustery conditions strengthened along the coast.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting dangerous weather conditions across New South Wales for Tuesday, December 31.
There will be elevated fire danger and heatwave conditions.
The fire danger rating for the Mid North Coast will be Very High. Temperatures are expected to tip 31 degrees in Port Macquarie and up to 35 degrees in Wauchope before a cool change.
There will be areas of smoke haze in the south. Winds will be northwest to northeasterly 15 to 25 km/h becoming northeasterly 20 to 30 km/h in the middle of the day.
Rural Fire Service Mid Coast District has warned all fire permits will be suspended. Under these conditions, you should review your bush fire survival plan, keep yourself informed about conditions and be ready to act if necessary.
