Hyde led Macquarie to the inaugural MNC Premier League title in 2017/18 where he was also named the competition's player of the year.
However, he only had limited games with Macquarie last season before attempting to shift to United. This failed to gain sufficient support from the Premier League clubs.
A first grade rugby league player with Port City, Hyde has been recovering from neck and back injuries sustained last winter.
United captain Ricky Campbell said Hyde have fully fit and is looking forward to having a hit with his new club.
"Josh's going to be a big plus for us,'' Campbell said.
"He's is a quality player.''
Hyde will slot into the batting lineup at four or five.
"But that will depend on whether we bat or bowl first,'' Campbell added.
"I can change that around if I need.''
Hyde will also bolster United's spin bowling options.
Campbell added that Hyde will be able to 'chance his arm' in a T20 match.
"T20 gives him a bit of licence,'' he said.
United will go into the match without opening bowler Sam Whitbread and batsman Aaron Pin, who both have work commitments.
