For a third-consecutive day, rain delayed the resumption of the first Test in Pakistan in 10 years.
Both teams stayed in their hotel and only match officials came to the ground to witness the gloomy weather conditions.
Overnight rain left plenty of water on the covers at the Pindi Cricket Stadium and the outfield was also soggy, leaving umpires with no choice but to call it off at 1200 local time.
Sri Lanka, who last played a test in Pakistan in 2009, are 6-282 in their first innings, with Dhananjaya de Silva unbeaten on 87 and Dilruwan Perera not out six.
So far, only 91.5 overs of play has been possible in the first encounter in the two-match series which is part of ICC's World Test Championship.
The wet weather in the north has badly affected the revival of Test cricket in Pakistan. Rawalpindi last hosted a Test in 2004 when India beat Pakistan by an innings.
Sri Lanka were the last team to play a Test in Pakistan in March 2009, when terrorists attacked the touring team's bus in Lahore. The ambush killed eight people and left several Sri Lankan players and officials injured.
In the interim, Pakistan have played home Tests on neutral territory, mostly in the United Arab Emirates.
