The Port Macquarie Hastings School of Hard Knocks Choir were given 40 fold-up chairs by Wauchope Country Club and local Wauchope restaurant, Sheathers on High. It will enable them to perform outdoors more, and it was fitting that they were presented on International Day of People with Disabilities, (Tuesday December 3).
"This day is held to give recognition and raise public awareness, understanding and acceptance to those in our community with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions," said choir coordinator Suzanne Steel.
"This generous donation of 40 chairs means we will be able to sing more in outdoor spaces, because standing for periods of time is difficult for some of our members with special needs.
"Our choir has broken down barriers and we will now reach many more sectors of our community, and have the opportunity to share our unique and exciting way of entertaining audiences."
The choir held a concert at Wauchope Country Club, energetically led by creative director Tim Maddren, and accompanied by guitarist Matt Brooker. Some choir members played a variety of musical instruments.
Vince from the choir said it meant they could be more inclusive.
"This group is all about inclusion. So many times, the disabled have been stuck in the attic of the community and ignored, but now we have a voice like never before," he said.
Tanya Simmons from Sheathers On High and Caleb Rose, general manager of the Wauchope Country Club said they were delighted to raise money for such an awesome choir.
"Tanya is an inspirational member of our community who does everything she can to help people, and our club is delighted to have raised the money for the chairs with her," said Mr Rose.
