Port Macquarie hairdresser Karlie Tilston says this is one of the main drivers behind the Community Hair Project.
Karlie, from Savvy Hair Studio, is calling on qualified hairdressers and barbers or apprentices to offer some time to cut hair for people in need.
The CHP works alongside the Soup Kitchen four times a year offering haircuts, a cuppa and some compassion. There are plans to expand their volunteer service to seniors.
"It is a good opportunity to help out in the community and giving something to people who may not be able to afford a hair cut," she said.
"This is about making people feel good about themselves. You can have a really good chat with people you may not necessarily come across in your day to day life.
"It is a really good thing to do. It is good for the soul.
"I am sure that many people would be surprised to know just how many people out there just can't afford a simple haircut.
"You get to hear lots of stories; some of them will really surprise you," she said.

It is also about breaking down some of the stigma associated with people doing it tough.
Karlie wants to hear from qualified hairdressers and barbers or apprentices who have completed their hair cutting modules who are willing to help out.
They can join the cause by searching for Community Hair Project, completing the form and getting involved.
"All we need is a few hours every few months," she said.
"It is a great way of giving something back.
"I believe it is a heartfelt thing to do."
Community Hair Project is held in March, April (during youth week), July and November.
Volunteer hairdressers or barbers give about three hours each.
"The Soup Kitchen puts on a spread each time and that includes tea, coffee and some beautiful food," she added.
Karlie got involved after reading about the project some 18 months ago.
She said a number of local cafes were also involved in the event.
